Brandon Miller heated up, as did Alabama, which avoided the fate of two other top seeds in the NCAA Tournament and shrugged off Maryland 73-51 behind a dominant second half on Saturday night.
The Crimson Tide (31-5) has advanced to second in the Sweet 16 in the past three tournaments and ninth overall. Alabama meets fifth-seeded San Diego State in the South Region semifinals in Louisville, Kentucky, on Friday.
Before the game, Purdue and defending national champion Kansas had been down even before the game, and top seed Houston trailed Tide rival Auburn by 10 points in the first half earlier at Legacy Arena before pulling away.
Alabama and Miller got off to a slow start, but North America’s No. 1 and NBA Most Valuable Player finished with 19 points after losing in their first-round match. Miller suffers from a hip injury and missed his first shots of the tournament.

Jahvon Quinerly scored 22 points on the one-year anniversary of his left knee injury early in a second-round loss to Notre Dame, which still tied him earlier this season. Made 4 of 6 3 heads.
Charles Pediaco had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Alabama starts off the bench with two minutes left to cheers of “Sweet 16” amid a friendly crowd.
Julian Reese scored 14 points for Maryland (22-13) before losing. Jahmir Young scored 12.
Alabama, the top seed overall, faced little drama, unlike other top seeds.

The explicit acronym of FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON is sending the internet into a post-March frenzy
No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson upset top seed Purdue 63-58 on Friday in only the second upset. Then No. 8 Arkansas beat the Jayhawks 72-71 earlier on Saturday. Houston eventually pulled away from Auburn while the Tide waited for their chance.
The first half was more impressive for Maryland, other than trailing 28-23, as the team gave up only 63 points in the game.
The Big Picture
Maryland: The 2002 National Champion Terps failed to make their 15th trip to the Sweet 16 in head coach Kevin Willard’s first season. They also lost to Alabama in the second round two years ago under former head coach Mark Turgeon. Maryland’s defense was on point enough that they held the lead for most of the first half despite stretching nine consecutive touchdowns.

Alabama: Depth shown so far. The Tide dominated the game despite not getting much of a kick off starters Mark Sears and Noah Clowney or Nick Pringle, the star of the opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
the next
Alabama faces San Diego State in its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2004, which was also the Tide’s only racing year for the Elite Eight. Crimson Tide did not reach the Final Four.
