Residents of a neighborhood in Northeast Los Angeles have been baffled by a string of paid food shipments that show up on doorsteps despite not being ordered.
Los Angeles Times I reported this week Residents along Range View Avenue in the Highland Park neighborhood are receiving deliveries of chicken sandwiches, milkshakes, pastries, coffee and other items they’ve never ordered from food delivery services like Uber Eats.
Unsolicited deliveries began in February, and a handful of people told The Times they sometimes received multiple orders a day. It is not clear if the orders were a hoax or prank of some sort.
Residents say delivery drivers have not been able to provide much information about who is placing orders either because they do not know or because deliveries use other people’s names.
“The bikers are always laughing at the situation,” said Ring View resident Will Neal, a documentary filmmaker.
“It’s kind of remarkable what they can do with a soggy sandwich,” Neal added, jokingly referring to the four McDonald’s McGridles he received at his home on Feb. 25. his house.
Some residents ate the food, some threw it away, and others donated it to local charities.
“I don’t trust it — I’m getting rid of it,” Dean Sao, a carpenter at nearby Pasadena City College, told the outlet. “I don’t know who does it. We were joking at first: It must be Elon Musk — I don’t know who could afford it.”
Morgan Currier, which received 30 deliveries, told the outlet that it told the delivery driver to call the number associated with the order, and it was fired.
An Uber spokesperson told Fox Business that the company has launched an investigation into the source of the orders and has “taken action” against a number of accounts.
The spokesperson added that the company monitors requests sent to this section of Highland Park.
