John Fetterman’s wife shares sweet photos of the Democratic senator smiling with his family at the Wendy’s

John Fetterman’s wife shared sweet photos of the smiling senator while eating dinner with his family at the Wendy’s as he takes a break from Walter Reed’s depression treatment.

The Pennsylvania Democrat, 53, checked himself into Walter Reed in Maryland last month after his clinical depression became more “severe.”

Fetterman also suffered a stroke in May, and his sensory issues and communication issues have been well documented since he was sworn in as a senator in January.

His wife, Gisele Barretto Fettermann, posted a sweet snap of the family surrounded by empty Wendy’s cups and frying pans at the hospital on Friday.

“We can do difficult things when we do them together,” she wrote on Twitter. “So proud of Joao, the kids, and everyone who has shared their own struggles these past few weeks with us. He’s getting better.’

In early February, the Pennsylvania senator was being treated at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., for vertigo. Doctors ruled out another stroke at the time — after he suffered one in May 2022 — and he was released from hospital.

His chief of staff Adam Gentelson said that he had “battled with depression his whole life”, but eventually decided to seek treatment when he was examined by Dr. Brian Monahan, attending physician to the United States Congress.

“John is getting the care he needs, and he’ll be back to himself soon,” Gentelson added, brushing off concerns his health could affect his political future.

Last month, Fetterman was hospitalized at George Washington University Hospital after he became dizzy at a Democratic retreat and was held for two nights of observation. Doctors said he did not have a second stroke.

Soon after her husband signed himself up, she took her kids on a trip to Canada to avoid the “media circus.”

A senior aide told NBC that it has been difficult to distinguish between the senator’s stroke recovery and depression, with the staffer saying that it’s sometimes unclear whether he “can’t hear you, or he’s kind of crippled by his depression and his social anxiety.”

He voluntarily admitted himself to Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, on February 16.

“We understand the intense interest in John’s standing and particularly appreciate the outpouring of well-wishes,” Calvillo said. “However, as we said, this will be a weeks-long process, and while we’ll be sure to keep people updated as it progresses, that’s all that can be offered by an update.”

On February 24, the senator’s wife posted on social media that she had driven to Niagara Falls via Buffalo, New York, with their children Carl, Grace, and Augustus due to a media presence outside their Braddock home, following news of her husband’s treatment.

I’m not really sure how to navigate this trip, but I’m thinking about it slowly. One week ago today when the news broke, the kids were out of school and the media trucks were circling our house,” she tweeted.

“I did the first thing I could think of…pack them in the car and drive,” she wrote, after it was said her husband could spend weeks in the hospital while doctors worked on treatment and medication.

We talked about a lot of hard stuff and how we’re all going to have to go through tough stuff. On the need to be kind…to everyone and to ourselves, Gisele Fettermann continued.

She also posted a video in which she calmly discussed how their son August is stuck in a zip lining – recording the post while the “rescue” was underway.

We did some scary things but we did it together. We slid over Niagara Falls and August got stuck. We’ve talked about flexibility and the need to always have an open heart and an open mind.
