FA Cup draw live: Manchester City, Manchester United and Fulham learn the fate of the semi-finals

Tommy Doyle took matters into his own hands to ensure he would emulate his grandparents by playing at Wembley after launching Sheffield United into the FA Cup semi-final with a stunning stoppage time win against Blackburn Rovers.

The Manchester City loanee watched video footage of his paternal grandfather Mike Doyle and maternal grandfather Glenn Pardew playing at City’s National Stadium in the late 1960s and 1970s, and will now join them as the 25-yard Thunderbolts make a 3-2. Quarter-final win at Bramall Lane.

His shot completed a late conversion as United exited, trailing by goals from Ben Brereton Diaz and Sam Schmodex, which came either side of Sam Gallagher’s goal, until the final ten minutes.

Ollie McBurney leveled the Blades in the 81st minute before the Doyle champions booked their first FA Cup semi-final place since 2014 in a thrilling game.

It was tough on Blackburn, who are yet to play at the new Wembley, but will now focus all their attention on the promotion push to the Championship.

Pep Guardiola joked that Erling Haaland’s goal-scoring record would make things more difficult for the player in the future as expectations were now high for him.

Guardiola said: “This player will face a problem in the future. Every match he is expected to score three or four goals, and this will not happen.”

“He doesn’t care because he’s so positive, so optimistic and never complains. Julian, again, what a partnership. When they play together they score goals.

“Goal numbers (for Haaland), I don’t know but if we play well, Erling will score goals. It’s unbelievable that he scores goals by playing just one hour. Very effective, incredible threat. His joy is in life.”

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has no doubts Erling Haaland will become one of the greats of the game after witnessing the Manchester City striker’s power firsthand in the 6-0 FA Cup defeat at the Etihad Stadium.

“I played against the greats of that time, (Lionel) Messi, Ronaldinho, (Zinedine) Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo,” said the former City defender and captain. “In the end they are part of a very special elite because I think even the best of them find it very difficult to stop these guys, no matter what you say, because they will find a way and someone like Erling will continue to find a way.

“The most important thing for me is that his game can still improve and that’s probably the difference with other stars in general, to me he looks like a great star who wants to improve and that’s exciting to see him.

“I think the goalscoring record in general puts you in a certain category, a certain category. I don’t need to say more than to show you his goalscoring record.

“It’s the hardest part of the game but I see the mentality is getting better. His game has improved since he arrived six months ago and if he keeps it up he’s going to have to (consider it great) because that’s not something you test very often.”
