Biden’s DHS Plans to Slash ICE Criminal Alien Deportations

Deportations of illegal alien convicts have fallen sharply since President Joe Biden took office, and he plans fewer population deportations this year.

“Under the Biden administration, immigration enforcement has taken a back seat to opening up border policymaking, and this FY24 offensive budget is another example,” Joe Idlow, who served as a senior official in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the Trump administration, said. Tell Fox News.

Edlow added:

With more than 400,000 convicted criminal aliens on the non-detained list, why would the immigration enforcement agency hope to remove fewer than 30,000 of them? It’s time for congressional sources to make sure ICE enforces the law and restore some semblance of integrity to domestic enforcement.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is back Or removed 38,477 criminal immigrants from the United States in fiscal year 2022, according to ICE’s (DHS) Department of Homeland Security’s budget proposal in 2024. That was 50 percent short of the target of 91,500 in Biden’s first full fiscal year.

The 2022 figure represents a 74 percent decrease from fiscal year 2019 when ICE returned 150,141 illegal convicts to their home countries or removed them from the United States under then-President Donald Trump’s administration. ICE was on par with its target of 151,000 deportations that year, which followed 145,262 deportations in fiscal 2018.

In the “corrective actions” portion of the budget justification, DHS noted that ICE is working to gain “increased levels of cooperation from foreign countries” and to expedite deportations “when possible.”

“Assigning more deportation officers and Office of Principal Legal Counsel (OPLA) attorneys quickly to improve case management can reduce roadblocks and inefficiencies in the removal process,” she added.

Additionally, DHS blamed the “significantly lower removal numbers” on “environmental factors and the policy environment,” insisting that “operational performance” had a lesser impact. One such factor that DHS has pointed out is the coronavirus pandemic.

In fiscal 2020, which saw the start of the pandemic, there were 103,762 deportations, down from the previous two years under the Trump administration. The following fiscal year, which was effectively split between Trump and Biden, resulted in 39,149 deportations of criminal aliens from ICE.

The Department of Homeland Security said deportations are “a trend[ed] upwards” throughout fiscal 2022, though 11,458 in the most recent quarter is still a far cry from the Trump administration’s benchmarks.

And though the numbers are “trending upward,” Biden’s Department of Homeland Security plans to reduce the number of ICE deportations of criminals again, with a goal of just 29,389 in fiscal years 2023 and 2024.

ICE also intends to cut “[a]The number of non-citizens held daily in detention facilities” will reach 25,000 in fiscal year 2024. This will be the lowest number going back to at least 2018.

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking $8.7 billion in funding for ICE in 2024.

In January, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorcas implemented a policy directing ICE agents to “raise wages for the millions of illegal immigrants who are driving many of the older, slower, sicker Americans out of the workforce,” Breitbart News’ Neil Monroe reported.

It came months after the Biden administration allowed the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) to “remove … from its membership” a labor union representing about 6,800 ICE agents, who were subsequently left without a collective bargaining agreement.
